That’s us — SVES & Consort of Viols (from uni of York) — small box up in the corner, performing our “Image of Melancholly” programme tomorrow (Sat March 8) at 2.30pm. It’s all sad stuff but it’s still a joy. Come and be miserable with us. Link in bio…

Disintegration.
“O Dowland” first outing tomorrow evening, 7.30pm at the Rymer Auditorium, Uni of York. Looking forward — with just a small amount of anxiety — to sharing these ideas. They’ve been in gestation for a while, and much of the processes are new to me, including playing the viola da gamba (my favourite reasonably new pastime) but also messing around with a Disklavier and pairing with viol consort. I’ve been exploring tropes of Melancholy in music especially of John Dowland and the idea of disintegration has become a big part of the process, especially relating to the practice of composing “divisions” in around Dowland’s time.
So here’s a process of MIDI disintegration playing out. This type of process runs through tomorrow’s piece, in both live (with some randomisation) and predetermined fashion.
Looking forward to sharing what’s here before continuing to shape and mould these ideas some more. With @ben.maloney @marijoanna32 @minaa.j0 Fintan O’Hare @zanviol & @yorkconcerts

At The Umbrella Rooms today — as you can see — to bring all #thepromiseopera music together. There will be singing and accordion-playing, also violin-playing, also a number of ukuleles, and also maybe some oddly-tuned pianos, and also some sine waves … among other things.
Deep breath.

Just back from a glorious day spent with the most brilliantly talented and interesting people — extraordinary poets, composers, singers, pianists — and I feel reminded of exactly why I feel compelled to do what I try to do.
@daltonjayharrison79 @phil_pearce_le @edwardpictonturbervill @maxwellhydetenor especially — what a privilege to come together and think and make something. I feel totally enriched.
“King” had its first outing today at the @leedsliederfestival — inspired by Phil’s work and also broadly (I think) about feeling unseen and in need of guidance and mentorship. It felt really meaningful to work with this lot.

Opera hiatus today to finish working on “King”: a setting of a beautiful text by @daltonjayharrison79 for the @leedsliederfestival
This poem (as I read it) is all about identity, belonging, looking for a leader and about growth — about masculinity, too. It’s funny, because there’s so much overlap in the worlds of this poetry and @nicolakidsbooks & @laura.f.carlin’s wonderful children’s book “The Promise” — the subject of our new opera @thepromiseopera. Characters that want to be seen, and guiding forces that channel that energy for good in the world.

This @goliardrecordings tape is easily the coolest thing I’ve purchased so far this year (alongside maybe the first @curiouscorrespondence box set, which funnily enough also sort of fetishises the analog experience). Can’t wait to listen to it. If you need me, I’ll be in the attic looking for my Walkman.

This happens in just over two weeks, and I can’t wait tbh. Music by a fabulous assortment of composers and musicians including: Onyx Brass, Michael Bawtree, the Choir of Selwyn College (Cambridge), Simon Hogan, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Tara Creme, Simon Beattie, Kerensa Briggs, David Knotts, James Mitchell AND Pia Rose Scattergood. JOYOUS. No doubt also many wordsmiths represented, including the very talented Chloe Stopa-Hunt.
The setting of Chloe’s text that I contribute to the concert is based on the penultimate scene of Shakespeare’s Richard II — Richard is left alone to face his death in a prison cell with only his thoughts after giving up his crown to Henry Bolingbroke. I’m no Shakespeare expert, but responded to Chloe’s passion for the character, wanting to present and support her poetry the best I could. I wrapped her texts in brass fanfares, because they’re regal and they seemed to knock knock knock at Richard in a way that felt appropriate to me.

Ever get a sinking stomach-feeling when you come across something that has so many possibilities? Messing around with MusicXML and for someone that’s done quite a bit of music typesetting over the years, am suddenly blown over (generally) by the potency of MusicXML esp with Python 🐍 (and also MIDI) ... this obviously doesn’t do it justice, but worth noting that the beats don’t add up — it’s a bit more complicated to make that happen in Sibelius itself (not that you’d want to particularly). That last note is a joke by my computer lol

Enjoying working on a setting of John Donne for the chapel choir of @lincolnsinn at the moment while also finally scratching a burning itch to learn the organ — stumbled across this (upon blistered feet after some determined pedal-work — symptom of bad technique, or maybe just bad shoes) at Holy Trinity in York, which happens to tie in with the thing I’m composing. Such a mysterious and powerful symbol. And it’s funny cos this piece brings me in a circle back to the time when I was caught tinkering with the Lincoln’s Inn organ while writing an organ piece for the very same chapel. Circles and circles and circles and ...
